Disclaimer: The following is a free expression of my opinions and no one should take it seriously.
I wanted to post this but I haven’t had the will to until now. I wanted to say that the Oscars are so retarded. I think I’m the only one that thinks it is. Seriously has anyone ever watched these movies that are nominated? Be honest. I don’t think anyone’s even heard half of these movies that are nominated. If no one’s heard or even watched these movies, how do they win the nomination? Call me ignorant. Do the Oscar crew decides who wins the award? If they do decide who wins, what makes the audience think that the Oscar crew isn’t persuaded by the movie producers to let them win?? Lets look at some example movies:
- Capote: Never heard of till now.
- Hustle & Flow: Movie about crunk music. Don’t even waste your money.
- Brokeback Mountain: Movie about gay cowboys – Oscar bait. I don’t want to sound like a homophobe (I’m not) but I hate movies that are made so they can get Oscars.
- Walk the Line: Movie about Johnny Cash. The only audience that watches this are old people. It doesn’t even sound interesting. Even if it WAS interesting, its probably doctored, i.e. made up an event that didn’t happen
- Good Night and Good Luck: Movie in black and white about some guy on the radio played by George Clooney. If I wanted to watch a B&W movie, I’d go to Blockbuster and rent a movie made in 1960s. This will probably be a movie where your history/politics teacher makes you watch.
- Mrs. Henderson Presents – Mrs. Who???
- Transamerica – Sounds interesting, but still, NEVER HEARD OF!
- Pride & Prejudice- Finally, a movie I’ve heard of.
- North Country – Another one I heard of. Hot Charlize Theron plays one of those roles where she a non-sexually applealing woman. Wait a minute… haven’t she done that before with Monster?
- Syriana – Another Clooney flick. Yes I’ve heard of it. I’m beginning to think Clooney is in desperate need of Oscars so he acts/directs 2 movies so he can up the chances of winning. Hey! When you’re nominated 5? times, you’re bound to win at least one.
- Crash – I almost watched this movie. It sounds pretty good too. Maybe I should watch it.
- Cinderella Man – I don’t get it. How ironic is the title. Cinderella is a boxer!
- History of Violence – Allllmost watched it, but no.
- Junebug – no, never heard of.
- The Constant Gardener- This movie is the only one I’ve watched. It’s was actually pretty good because it portrays a corrupted business/secret’s even tactics. JUST LIKE the Oscars.
- Munich - Excuse me Mr. Spielberg, but haven’t you already made a movie like this? Schindler’s List?
Alright, I think you need to get your stuff straight.
First, just because you’ve never heard of it doesn’t mean it wasn’t any good. In fact, I have heard of many of those movies simply by reading their reviews in the NYT.
Now let me tackle the individual comments:
Capote: I have heard many good things about this, please refer to comment #1.
Brokeback Mountain: Noone makes movies just to win Oscars. Someone thought this was a story that should be told.
Walk The Line: Johnny Cash is one of the greatest musicians, and the story of his life as told in this movie is real. In fact, his real life is wilder than this movie.
Good Night And Good Luck: It’s no wonder older people make fun of our generation with comments like that. It’s called artistic style. Did you ever watch Clerks? That was completely black and white but modern, and everyone loved it. Besides, there was color in the 60s.
Syriana: If you actually watch the movie, Clooney’s character isn’t that major. In fact, there are about 4 major characters. Again, no one makes a movie to win Oscars. In fact, it was about a book called See No Evil which was a memoir and Clooney decided Baer’s story needs to be depicted.
History Of Violence: Worth seeing.
Munich: Did you even read that IMDB tagline? It is nothing like Schindler’s List! Schindler’s List was about a factory owner who helped free Jews by buying them into slavery. Munich is about the Israeli athelete murders during the 1972 Olympics. Come on man, read up before you open your mouth.
Remember, these are academy awards and are selected and chosen by the industry, not the retards that line up for movies like The Hulk.
Wow, uhmm, let me see where to start.
Yes the Oscars are self indulgent, self promoting, anti-piracy, and propaganda load of crap. They take otherwise fine comedians, or talk show hosts, make them emcee’s for the awards and water down their material to mindless drivel. Jon Stuart is great on hi sown field with his own rules, Chris Rock is the same way. Can you imagine Dave Chapelle hosting the Oscars un-censored; tell me you wouldn’t tune in to see what he would end up saying.
To reiterate what s1n said, just because you haven’t heard of it really doesn’t mean its not any good. It is perfectly fine to have zero desire to see any of the movies mentioned at the Oscars, but you really could be missing out. I think back to when American Beauty won awards for movie of the year, and may have won several others and was certainly nominated for others. It wasn’t until the summer after the Oscars I finally saw it, and I was blown away by it.
To take this another notch, many of the movies you mentioned you haven’t even read what they are about. Is it because they aren’t sequels to over-promoted garbage a-la Saw 2 or are in such desperate need of an audience they hire Paris Hilton to act in their flick only to kill her (House of Wax) in a desperate attempt to lure viewers in?
To completely miss the story line of Munich making parallels to Schindler’s List because it has the same director? Does this mean that Indiana Jones is the same as Minority Report because they are both Spielberg movies? Why not lump in his new one coming out in May, The Da Vinci Code? You may want to read about what Good Night, and Good Luck is about as well.
Is this part of the reason why Hollywood is churning out such crappy movies as of late? To reach an audience that would otherwise completely ignore movies nominated because they are in black and white or about a legendary musician?
By the way, did you see Ray? Just curious…
Just what movies did you see last year?
Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo?
Dirty Love?
Star Wars III?
House of Wax?
Bewitched?
Son of the Mask?
Congratulate yourself if you have as they are recognized as the absolute worst movies of the year. Compare that list to the ones you haven’t seen. Not convince? Then head over to “Shaggy Dog” or “Failure to Launch”. Or maybe you are waiting for other gems like “Find me Guilty” or “Basic Instinct II” or “Hairspray”.
Well I expected these kind of comments because I admit I was harsh on these movies. But I had to be to prove a point. My main point of the post is to say that the Oscars are so manipulated.
I completely agree that if I haven’t heard of a movie that it doesn’t mean it sucks, but I do believe that hearing word of mouth is better than some newspaper reviewer praising how good it is. I would NEVER listen to a newspaper reporter praising a movie because it’s all marketing. Have you ever realized on movie posters and commercials with quotes like “THIS MOVIE IS RIVETING – NY Times”. It’s like a you scratch my back I scratch yours situation for the producers and the newspapers. They make a good quote, the producers put the quote in the posters, and both wins.
But how many of these movies listed have you heard friend say “Damn I just saw ______ and it was great!”? Maybe a couple but most of these movies are more like “I watched ______ and it was ehhhhhhh okay. I’d rather wait on DVD”. Now I’m not saying Saw II should’ve been nominated or anything but I saw that movie and damn it was great!
Alright, now how many of these movies are you going to say to yourself, “I’m going to go and see these movies”
s1n: Walk The Line: So have you watched this movie to say that this is real? and how do we know that it’s not dramatized more by the producers. We’re talking about Hollywood here. There’s no proof to say that its real life depiction of him.
I’m suprised no one agreed to me that Brokeback Mountain is one of those movies made for Oscar bait. I bet you if any movie producer takes a controversial topic like gay, race, abuse, religion, etc… you’re bound to be nominated. I’m sorry, but it has worked for Brokeback and Crash.
Munich: “Nothing like Schindler’s List” is an understatement Both movies are about the same time and history, about the jewish, war, and crime and directed by the same person.
This is a completely bad analogy. Sure its the same director but Indiana Jones is set in a completely different time than Minority/Davinci. You can’t even tie these movies together but at least I pointed out that Munich has the same topic as Schindler’s list.
I’m not saying it’s EXACTLY like the movie but you have to think again for yourself it’s pretty damn similar. Shoot me but I think I even heard Jon Stewart even made a joke about it being the same as Schindler’s List. House of Wax is stupid.
I’m thinking Hollywood’s brainwashed everyone. I guess I’m on a different page than you all but if I were to choose a movie listed above, ie: Walk the Line or Fun with Dick & Jane I’d choose the latter, because it’s entertainment and a funny movie is supposed to entertain the viewer not because this guy’s a legendary musician and he died so let’s make a movie about him. Don’t get me wrong here I’m not hatin’ on Cash I just don’t want to comply with Hollywood and the Oscars. Either that or there’s something creepy with Joaquin Phoenix.
Oh well… Call me a non-conformist.
I guess it’s Hollywood that makes what we should think and not vice versa. It’s them who tells us what to watch, what movies are good, and if they pound it in our head a couple of times we’ll eventually watch it. (*grin* about the music industry too but thats another story)
Before I even posted this I knew I’d get a lot of comments like this. I admit I have a weird taste in movies and haven’t seen Star Wars 4-6 but who are you to judge what kind of movies do I like? Just cuz I bashed on some of the movies above doesn’t neccessarily mean I like the movies below. How stereotypical of you!
Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo? I watched it was funny and entertaining.
Dirty Love? no
Star Wars III? HORRIBLE – I don’t see what’s with all the star wars hype
House of Wax? not even
Bewitched? no
Son of the Mask? Rather watch grass grow
Failure to Launch? Matthew Mccaungnahey plays the same character in every movie. No
I’m sorry but I don’t think Hollywood has churned out any good movies this year except for a few notably mentioned ones that I can think of in my head:
Crash, Constant Gardener, The Interpreter – Loved it, why is it not nominated? cuz its not oscar material.
winningpose, you should quit while you were ahead. The more you talk, the more it shows you have the worst taste in movies.
Okay, so let me address that last comment’s paragraph. No good movies this year?? What the hell were you doing all year? Lets see, there was Broken Flowers, Syriana, Wallace And Gromit, March Of The Penguins, and Jarhead. Check out the entire list of movies released last year.
Ever notice the crappiest movies seem to gross the most? Why’s that? One word: marketing. All of those top grossing movies that you’ve alledgedly heard of by “word of mouth” (read: TV commercials), have insane marketing budgets. That doesn’t mean they’re good, its just they have a crapload of money to flush away for something.
That brings up my next point. Your comment about how you don’t want to read some newspaper’s opinion of a movie (the Times no less) because you think it means that they are paid to give good reviews is complete balogna. You’re living in some fantasy conspiracy world where everyone’s opinions are bought and paid for. Sadly, the newspapers is the last source of uncorruptable media. I’m tired of these bullshit complaints that the movie or music industry tells us what to like. If you’re being convinced to listen or watch a movie against your will, then it’s because you’re weak-minded. The industries churn out lots of great material but the only thing that gets large amounts of press is the bottom of the barrel junk. There is still plenty of great new music getting made and even more good movies being made, you just have to stray off the beaten path.
You’re not a non-conformist, in fact, you are the complete opposite. You are the kind of conformist who buys tickets to those big budget watered down movies with poor acting and even poorer storyline.
Don’t give me that “Hollywood doesn’t churn out any good movies” bullshit. There were at least a dozen memorable and quality movies. Perhaps you should stop seeing the movies with the largest signs and start reading their reviews before going to the theatre.
Besides, your argument is completely baseless because you have most likely heard of the movies you think are good through marketing. How exactly did you first hear about Saw 2, a commercial?
Ahh yes maybe I should quit because everyone should agree to the Oscars. They said it, then they must be right. So you’re saying Broken Flowers, Syriana, Wallace And Gromit, March Of The Penguins, and Jarhead were good? I assume you saw these. Jarhead was dull. Wow! difference of opinions there.
I like how you all assume that if I didn’t like these movies then I must like the rest of the movies not nominated for the Oscars. Then you assume I like movies like Star Wars, Bewitched, etc…
Did you misread me??? I didn’t say they get paid to give good reviews. I said if they did give good reviews their good quotes are going to be put on the movies posters. You know how many newspapers would die to have their names on there?
I dunno where you get this from but both good and bad movies alike get large amount of press. King Kong for example, which is an Oscar movie, got a TON of press, and they even made a video game for it!. Are you saying King Kong is a bottom of the barrel junk? If so, then I rest my case. If you don’t agree its the bottom of the barrel, then you just contradicted yourself. Another example: Chronicles of Narnia. Got enough press? I say way too much press. I’m have in my office a Chronicles of Narnia tissue box.
Again, I love how everyone just assume that I do this, I do that. Its great! The last movie ticket I bought was The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Saw II, The Constant Gardener. Big budgeted?
Don’t you see the irony in this? First I like to say I don’t look at movie signs. Second you just made me chuckled because I said earlier in my reply about how a newspaper reviewer might be persuaded to praise a certain movie. So you’re a reader and listens to what they say in the reviews and judge a movie by that? This prove my whole point exactly. Newspapers DO tell the audience what they should and shouldn’t watch!
FYI: I already know about Saw 2 because I saw Saw 1. I saw Saw 1′s trailer on the internet. I wasn’t manipulated by people from the Oscars, nor newspaper reviewers (in fact it had mixed reviews), I didn’t see it on a commercial (come on, Saw in a commercial? that’s like really not for TV).
I like to conclude with this:
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS. So why are you disputing with me? I’m saying you shouldn’t be convinced to listen/watch a movie because the Oscars said it was or the newspaper says so. Yet, you defend the movies listed in the Oscars, and you listen to what the NY Times say. How can you say a movie is good without watching it? I don’t understand??? This is exactly what they want you to do.
I’m thinking outside the box here.
Let me start out by saying that I have a hard time funding the MPAA by going to see a movie in the theater. In fact I think I went a total 3 times last year. Like winningpose I haven’t heard of a lot of these movies. I check the trailers on http://www.apple.com/trailers every now and then so I have heard of North Country, Capote, and Munich to name a few. Of the movies in the list the only one I’ve actually seen was Cinderella Man. I borrowed the DVD, watched it, and thought it was great. Not awe inspiring, blow my socks off great, but still great movie. IMHO I haven’t seen a movie in a long time that made me say “WOW! That movie was awesome.†I’ve heard that North Country is of that caliber so I might check it out. As far as the Oscar’s is concerned, I could care less.
